About the Festival

The Moscow International Film Festival of Archive Films is organized by the Gosfilmofond of Russia and the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Illusion Cinema. It showcases collections from one of the world’s most important film archives and Russia’s largest film archive. The festival program includes films that were forgotten or underestimated by their contemporaries, as well as reels previously thought to be lost.

Festival Echo
The film screening, set to our soundtrack, took place at the Lenfilm Cinema in Saint Petersburg. The theater hall has a capacity of 200 people.
About the film
In 1927, Paul Liberchen and Sven Hedin undertook an expedition across Inner Asia, traversing the border of China and Mongolia to locate sites for airfield construction. Accompanied by a caravan of 300 camels, they journeyed over 2,500 kilometers through the desolate reaches and sands of the Gobi, receiving support in the villages and towns along their route.
Project Workflow
To start, we divided the film into two parts and analyzed what was happening on screen, moment by moment, to identify the emotional themes and select the appropriate sound design.
*in collaboration with Andrey Shevelev, a Russian sound designer.
We worked both at home, exchanging materials, and in the studio, piece by piece assembling our soundtrack. We studied the characteristic sound and instruments of that era and region. As a result, we created a 74-minute ambient soundtrack.
