COPERNI F/W 2023 METAL BAG

CONCEPT

This project explores a brand of metal bags as a communication system in which the object functions not only as a utilitarian item, but as a material statement. Metal is used not merely as a material, but as a carrier of meaning associated with structure, rigidity, protection, and the urban environment.

COPERNI S/S 2023 METAL BAG

The bag acts as a mediator between the human body and the city. The rigidity of the form, the weight, and the tactile properties of metal shape a specific bodily experience and influence perception. Brand communication is constructed through the visual language of structure, surface, and mechanics, where each design decision operates as a sign.

The project is developed as a visual research, in which images serve as the primary vehicle of meaning, while text functions as a theoretical framework. Drawing on communication theory, the metal bag is understood not as a fixed message, but as a process of interpretation, in which meaning emerges through the interaction of material, form, context, and viewer.

«HEAVY METALL» BRAND

HEAVY METALL explores the metal bag as a constructed object that communicates through its material, weight, and interaction with the body and the city. In this project, metal is treated not simply as a structural element, but as a language that shapes how the object is perceived and interpreted.

AI METAL CONCEPT BAGS

The bag becomes a mediator between human movement and the urban environment. Its rigidity, tactility, and spatial presence transform it from an everyday item into a material statement, a form that carries meaning before any words are spoken.

Reflection on Communication in Design

Throughout the project, our team approached communication not as the transmission of a fixed message, but as a process of meaning‑making shaped by visual and material choices. Meaning does not reside inside the object; it emerges through interaction through how the bag behaves in motion, how it touches the body, how it occupies space.

HELIOT EMIL SUMMER 2026 METAL BAG

Metal, form, and structure operate as a visual language. They influence how the object is read and how it emotionally resonates with the viewer or user. The weight, the hardness, the edges and joints — all of these elements communicate long before any verbal explanation appears.

Different audiences construct different meanings around the same bag. A general audience encounters the object through atmosphere, emotion, and bodily experience. A professional audience reads construction logic, material decisions, and design intent. Recognizing this difference became the foundation for developing two distinct presentations within the project.

Presentation for a General Audience

The Atmosphere of HEAVY METALL:

HEAVY METALL introduces the metal bag as an object that carries both weight and presence. For a general audience, the focus is on how the bag feels its cool surface, its solid form, its interaction with movement in everyday life. The experience of the object goes beyond utility. The bag becomes part of the body’s rhythm, reflecting light, producing sound, resisting softness. Through these qualities, it communicates character and intention without needing explanation.

PERSEPHONI METAL & LEATHER BAG

Metal as an Everyday Companion:

Although constructed from a material associated with industry and architecture, the bag lives within the flow of the city. It moves through streets, transports, staircases, and open spaces, shaping the user’s gestures and posture. In this context, the bag becomes a companion firm, expressive, and distinct. Its presence transforms routine actions into a subtle performance of interaction between person, object, and space.

Presentation for a Professional Audience

Material Logic and Structural Decisions: HEAVY METALL approaches the metal bag as a precise structural system. For a professional audience, the focus is placed on engineering decisions: how metal distributes weight, how joints are constructed, and how rigidity shapes form. Each element is intentional edges articulate structure, plates define tension, and the geometry follows functional logic.

Form, Proportion, and Design Language: The design language of HEAVY METALL relies on clarity, proportion, and controlled geometry. Professionals read form as a system: radius, thickness, transitions, and negative space serve as communicative elements that define the identity of the object. Precision becomes part of the brand’s visual narrative.

FACTURE OF METAL PATTERN

HEAVY METALL positions itself at the intersection of product design, industrial design, and fashion.

How Communication Theory Informed the Project

Semiotics: Material as a Sign:

Within HEAVY METALL, metal is understood as a sign rather than merely a material choice. Its rigidity, surface qualities, and structural behavior communicate ideas of strength, precision, and protection. The bag becomes a coded object: viewers interpret meaning through texture, proportion, and the physical presence of metal.

Rhetoric: Visual Sequencing as Argument:

The presentation of the bag, from close‑ups to full forms, from static shots to movement creates a visual argument. Rhetoric in design is expressed through composition, repetition, contrast, and pacing. The project uses visual sequencing to guide the viewer from sensation to structure, building a coherent narrative about the object.

Conclusion

HEAVY METALL redefines the bag as a communicative and constructed object. Through metal, geometry, and interaction with the body and the city, the project demonstrates that meaning is not embedded in the object itself but emerges through use, perception, and context.

HELIOT EMIL FALL 2019 METAL BAG

By presenting the brand to two different audiences general and professional the project reveals how interpretation shifts depending on the viewer’s position. For the general audience, the bag communicates through atmosphere, emotion, and sensory experience.

FACTURE OF METAL PATTERN

For professionals, it communicates through material behavior, structure, and design rationale. Communication theory becomes the bridge connecting these perspectives. Semiotics, rhetoric, and phenomenology provide the tools to understand how a metal bag can function simultaneously as a functional product, a sculptural form, and a communicative system. HEAVY METALL ultimately positions the metal bag as a statement, an object with intention, presence, and identity engaging the viewer in a dialogue shaped by materiality and experience.
